Chuck Ruth

Chuck Ruth earned high marks as a baseball umpire in the Tacoma-Pierce County area. He umpired at the recreation, high school and college level from 1965-77.

Ruth, born in Tacoma in 1937, attended Bellarmine Prep and graduated from Clover Park High School in 1955. In addition to umpiring, he spent many years as a youth sports coach. He coached baseball and softball from 1963-69, basketball from 1963-71 and football from 1963-79.

The Tacoma Sports-Recreation Federation named Ruth as the winner of the Ben Cheney Award in 1970 for his coaching efforts in the North End Athletic Association. In fact, Ruth was a founding member of the NEAA, and he also helped found the organization, Washington State Youth Baseball.

Chuck passed away in 1996.
