2004 Dill Howell Award

Don Danielson

Born in Tacoma in April of 1928, he is a 1946 graduate of Stadium HS and a 1951 graduate of CPS. He played basketball at CPS for two seasons, earning accolades as "most inspirational" in 1951. While in the Army he played for the Far East championship basketball team and participated in the 1953 All-Army tournament at Fort Meade. Neither his accomplishments on the hardwood, nor his playing career as a baseball outfielder at Stadium High and as an infielder for Zion Lutheran Church in church league softball, are what bring Don Danielson here today. Danielsons service to his community, and the reason why he is being honored, came with the Boys & Girls Clubs in Tacoma. As director of the South End Boys Club, he coached numerous softball and baseball teams for approximately two decades. Coaching, however, was a minor part of his involvement a he raised money for uniforms and equipment for approximately 12 to 15 teams sponsored each summer by the South End Boys Club. Its safe to say that without the tireless efforts of Don Danielson, many an aspiring athlete would not have enjoyed the fun and thrill of competition on the diamonds of Pierce County.
