Darron Nelson

When all-tournament teams were announced, it was a pretty good bet that the name Darron Nelson would often be heard. Nelson played fastpitch softball in the area for a number of teams including the Manke & Sons team that won the regional tournament and played in the 1974 national tournament in Clearwater, Fla.

Nelson was born on Oct. 9, 1938 in Dayton, Wash., and graduated from Federal Way High School in 1956. He also attended Grays Harbor Junior College and Western Washington University, earning his college degree in 1959.

Nelson was a talented athlete who played football in high school and both baseball and basketball in high school and college. He also played basketball for Plywood Tacoma, one of the top AAU teams in the country in the 1970s.
