Cy Greenlaw Oldtimers Salute Award
Unquestionably, Dick Greco is the most prolific home run hitter from Tacoma. In 12 minor league seasons from 1946 through 1957, Dick hit 333 home runs. In just four and half seasons playing for the Tacoma team in the Western International League (1946-1950), he hit 126 home runs.
The Stadium High School graduate (class of '43) was born in Tacoma on July 1925. At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds in his playing days, he intimidated a lot of pitchers. He was originally signed to a pro baseball contract by Chicago Cubs scout Roger Peck.
His 1950 season for Tacoma in the WIL was spectacular. In 148 games, he led the league in hits (203), total bases (363), home runs (36) and RBI (154). He was a league home run king three other times as well (33 for Montgomery in the South Atlantic League in 1951, 24 for Montgomery in 1952 and 30 for Missoula in the Pioneer League in 1957, his final season.) He was the Most Valuable Player of the South Atlantic League in 1952.
While acting as a player-manager for Modesto in the California League in 1956, Dick hit 44 home runs and drove in 162. His career batting average was .327. Dick's career numbers may have been even greater if not for the need to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II after graduating from Stadium.
Dick was an outfielder who had a strong accurate arm. He set a WIL record with 10 double plays by an outfielder. His life was so tied to baseball that he even got married at the ballpark. In 1950, he married Evelyn Moore of Victoria in a home plate ceremony before a game between Tacoma and Victoria.
